School partnerships are a key component of Futures and Options’ program design. In FY2022, Futures and Options launched its inaugural school-based internship pipeline program, where our hallmark career-readiness curriculum was integrated into the school day at Central Park East High School (CPEHS) and select juniors and seniors were able to leverage these learning opportunities and participate in paid, mentored internships with NYC businesses.
Our work-based learning workshops were embedded into a junior class seminar and our team collaborated with CPEHS faculty to co-facilitate classes that focused on in-demand 21st century competencies such as critical thinking, collaboration, and interpersonal skills. This robust partnership was incredibly successful; all participating students demonstrated gains in outcomes linked to short-term employability and are using their experiences to make better-informed choices about college applications and potential majors. Thank you CPEHS for your commitment to work-based learning and career exploration!
More ↓This past year, Futures and Options created a new collaborative partnership with Christie’s Auction House, the world-leading art and luxury business, focused on expanding youth access and exposure into the art world and associated careers. In an art industry first, Christie’s supported five new internship placements at Christie’s NYC headquarters, as well as five internships at other NYC arts and culture organizations, including MoCADA, Bronx Museum of the Arts, and ArtTable.
“We are excited to support Futures and Options to connect to talented, motivated young people,” said Ben Whine, Vice President and Development Director, Museums and Institutions. Students involved in the program praised the experience as a unique opportunity to explore a potential career path and learn about the arts-related professional world. We are truly grateful for this special partnership and look forward to another year of this innovative career exploration and internship program.
More ↓Capitalizing on our deep connections in the NYC business community, last year Futures and Options partnered with W. H. Maxwell Career and Technical Education High School to implement industry-specific career exploration workshops at this New York City Career and Technical Education (CTE) school. Students gained professional skills during multiple on-site workshops that focused on communication, time management, resume writing, networking, and more.
Students also heard directly from industry experts in Graphic Design, Cosmetology, and Vision Tech about their career pathways and industry trends, while also having their individual questions answered by our dedicated business volunteers. We're thankful to partner with Maxwell on this unique industry-specific career exploration program that has inspired students and industry experts alike, and we hope to replicate this model with other NYC school partners in the years to come.
More ↓The Futures and Options alumni community is a vibrant growing network, providing support to hundreds of program graduates as they navigate college and careers. Last year, nearly 90 Futures and Options alumni participated in our new mentoring program, which provided younger alumni the opportunity to build positive meaningful relationships with older alumni in the community.
Mentors supported mentees’ college and career goals and knowledge building by helping students with topics such as preparing for college, developing a resume and/or cover letter, and focusing on personal goals related to growth and exploration. Through these powerful relationships, mentors expressed being grateful for the opportunity to help younger alumni prepare for the “real world” and mentees shared how these special connections helped them to grow and feel more confident in their skills and future pathways. We are so proud of Futures and Options alumni and can’t wait to continue supporting them – and having them support each other – in their journeys.
