Afi Bongo participated in Healthcare Career Essentials before interning at The Wallace Foundation through our Philanthropy in Practice program. These opportunities helped her explore an interest in nursing and enabled her to apply the career skills she gained in our workshops to a professional work environment.
“I was undecided about nursing or healthcare, so I joined Healthcare Career Essentials to see what the best fit was for me and to talk to other people in the field to learn from their experiences,” she said. Afi particularly enjoyed the Career Exploration field trip that introduced attendees to the work and experiences of travel nurses. Her internship at The Wallace Foundation was also a key opportunity for her to gain confidence in interacting with new people. “I used to be really shy, and my internship helped me get comfortable speaking to people who have different backgrounds and to be confident in who I am.”

The internship environment enabled Henry to meet professionals and peers with similar ambitions. “I had the chance to learn from and with everyone I was surrounded by,” he said. The internship also steered him towards studying business at Baruch, where he continues to use many of the lessons he learned in the internship. “Whether it was balancing deadlines for various projects, prioritizing tasks based on urgency, or developing efficient workflows, the experience taught me how to stay organized and meet expectations in a fast-paced environment.”

Melanie is already pursuing future internship opportunities and is prepared to utilize the knowledge she gained during our program. “It helped me learn small things that I probably wouldn’t have noticed if I didn't do Career Essentials that could be the difference between getting more internships.”

Navjot received helpful coaching and mentorship during Career Essentials that allowed her to improve her communication skills. “For our project, I learned to speak louder, look at the audience, and actually make eye contact. That’s something I’ve never been able to do before, so I think I really improved my public speaking.” These communications skills were especially useful when she interned at Hospital for Special Surgery through The Internship Program. “I would not have thought public speaking would have been so important in an office setting, but it proved vital when speaking with patients and communication overall.”
